I find them rather difficult to defend, as enemies can get anywhere in the fort all too quickly. I've mostly used up/down stairs, but reclaimed forts usually have spiral ramp setups. Your dwarves can access this any way they want, it doesn’t really matter. Just curious how everyone prefers to handle their z-levels. The essentials are: The channel to a lower z-level.
